German states demand special meeting on drone defense threats
German states Lower Saxony and Bremen are urgently calling for a special session of the Interior Ministers' Conference (IMK) to address the hybrid threat posed by drones. In a letter to IMK Chairman Andy Grote, Interior Ministers Daniela Behrens and Eva Högl emphasized that the recent incident in Leipzig highlighted a “new dimension of threat” from hostile unmanned aerial systems to public safety and critical infrastructure.
The ministers identified several unresolved issues, including coordination between federal and state authorities, the protection of critical infrastructure, and the need for better drone defense technology at commercial airports and seaports. They argued that findings from the Joint Drone Defense Center must be implemented into practical, legally secure measures immediately.
Responding to concerns of organizational confusion, Andy Grote denied that there is “chaos” regarding responsibilities. He clarified that jurisdictions are defined: the Federal Police manage airports, the Bundeswehr handles military defense, and state police cover other areas. However, Grote acknowledged the need for a more unified strategy and faster information sharing to improve response times.
