Niedersachsen leads Germany with most towns named Neuenkirchen

Niedersachsen records the highest number of German localities bearing the name “Neuenkirchen”. Of the 18 towns called Neuenkirchen across Germany, nine are located in the state, more than any other Bundesland. The region has no town named “Altenkirchen”. The statistic was highlighted by author Florian Kneifel, noting the quirky distinction and listing each Neuenkirchen location in the state.

Kneifel wrote: “Niedersachsen führt eine besondere Statistik an: Kein anderes Bundesland in Deutschland hat mehr Orte mit dem Namen ‘Neuenkirchen’.” The observation was shared via NDR and tagesschau.de on 11 March 2025.
