Niedersachsen mushroom season begins amid mixed climate conditions

The mushroom foraging season has begun in Niedersachsen, Germany. While recent temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius, combined with rain and thunderstorms, have created favorable local conditions for growth, experts suggest the overall year may not be exceptional.

Rita Lüder of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Mykologie noted that previous periods of drought have significantly impacted mycelium in the soil, potentially limiting the total yield. Despite this, various regions remain viable for foragers depending on forest types.

The Lüneburger Heide is a prominent area for finding porcini, birch mushrooms, and bay boletes, though strict regulations apply within the Lüneburger Heide nature reserve, where collecting is prohibited. Other notable areas include the Elm-Lappwald nature park.
