Niedersachsen records highest number of tornadoes in Germany for 2026
Preliminary data from the German Weather Service (DWD) indicates that Niedersachsen has been the most affected region by tornadoes in Germany so far in 2026. Out of 34 confirmed tornadoes nationwide, nine have been recorded in Niedersachsen, followed by Hessen with eight.
A significant portion of these events occurred on August 19, 2026, when 17 tornadoes were confirmed in a single day. This surge was triggered by a dynamic weather pattern caused by low-pressure system ‘Olivia’, which moved across central Germany. The interaction between cool northern air and warm, moist southern air created wind shear, leading to the formation of rotating thunderstorm cells.
