Niederscherli to trial world-first noise-reducing biobitumen road surface

In Niederscherli, Switzerland, Schwarzenburgstrasse will undergo a trial installation of a noise-reducing road surface made from biobitumen. This experimental asphalt features a fine-grained, open-pored structure designed to minimize noise.

Unlike traditional bitumen derived from petroleum, this biobitumen is composed primarily of plant extracts, such as cashew nut shells. The production and transport of this material generate approximately one-third of the emissions compared to conventional bitumen, significantly reducing CO2 output in road construction. The application of such a noise-reducing biobitumen layer is considered a global first.

Construction is scheduled from Monday, September 7, to Thursday, September 10, 2026. During preparatory work, the road will be subject to alternating single-lane traffic controlled by signals or traffic services. A full closure of the street will occur from 1:00 PM on Wednesday, September 9, until approximately 5:00 AM on Thursday, September 10, preventing all access to affected properties and municipal roads. Sidewalks will remain accessible.
