Niek Heldoorn wins Embrunman triathlon for the second time

Dutch triathlete Niek Heldoorn has secured his second victory at the Embrunman, one of France’s most demanding long-distance triathlons. The win marks a significant comeback for Heldoorn following a challenging period involving injuries, surgeries, and rehabilitation.

During the competition, Heldoorn demonstrated strength in the high mountains, particularly during the 186 km cycling stage which included the ascent of the Col d’Izoard. After exiting the 3.8 km swim in fifth place, he took a solo lead on the bike, building a nearly six-minute advantage over Spanish athlete Jordi Montraveta. Although Montraveta closed the gap during the 42 km run, Heldoorn maintained his lead to finish with a time of 8:49:46.

In the women’s category, Saleta Castro took first place, with Belgian athlete Marine Moulin finishing in a notable second place. In the men’s standings, Jordi Montraveta finished second, followed by Clement Grandy in third. Belgian triathlete Michiel Stockman secured fifth place despite receiving a five-minute penalty.
