Śnieżka peat bog provides evidence of the Anthropocene

Scientists have identified a peat bog near Śnieżka in Poland as a critical geological archive that provides evidence for the Anthropocene, a new geological epoch defined by human activity.

Research published in Nature indicates that sediments from this undisturbed site contain key markers of human impact, such as radioactive plutonium and cesium isotopes resulting from nuclear testing. Other indicators include carbon isotopes, fly ash, fossil fuel combustion products, plastics, and industrial pollutants.

Professor Barbara Fiałkiewicz-Kozieł of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań noted that the Anthropocene is characterized by the rapid increase in human population and energy demand since the 1950s, leading to significant environmental changes through greenhouse gas emissions and resource extraction.
