Niels Bohr Institute researchers recreate miniature Big Bang
Researchers at the Niels Bohr Institute in the Netherlands have successfully recreated quark-gluon plasma, a superheated state of matter believed to have existed immediately after the Big Bang. By colliding oxygen-16 and neon-20 nuclei at nearly the speed of light, the team demonstrated that this primordial matter can be produced using much smaller atoms than previously thought necessary.
Historically, physicists believed that generating this state required the collision of heavy atoms, such as lead. However, this experiment proves that lighter nuclei can achieve the same result. Because the resulting droplet of plasma expands and cools too rapidly for direct observation, scientists analyzed the patterns of particles left in its wake.
The study revealed distinct geometric signatures: oxygen collisions produced a rounded spray of particles, while neon collisions resulted in a pattern shaped like a bowling pin, reflecting the actual geometry of the neon nucleus. These findings, published in Physical Review Letters, provide new methods for visualizing atomic nuclei through particle tracks.
