Nieuwerkerk Asylum Shelter Permit Hearing Draws Local Opposition

On 10 June, the municipal objection committee held a hearing in the sports hall De Kleine Vink to review the permit granted for an asylum‑seeker reception centre (ROL) in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel. Around 30 residents attended, along with representatives of the municipality of Zuidplas and the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA).

The complainants argued that the municipality had not adequately justified the location, saying alternative sites and dispersion were not seriously examined and that issues such as traffic safety, social safety and pressure on local services were insufficiently addressed. They also claimed that resident participation and the advisory panel’s recommendations were ignored.

After lengthy deliberations and a brief suspension, the committee allowed the residents to present their statements. The committee will now issue an advisory opinion on whether the permit violates law, administrative principles or case law. The municipal executive will decide on the objection after receiving the advice. Meanwhile, construction work may continue, but a group of objectors has asked a court to halt the work until the objections are resolved.
