Nieuwerkerken couple celebrates diamond wedding anniversary

Robert Bellens, 88, and Anny Janssens, 86, celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary on August 19 at Hof Gotegem in Nieuwerkerken. The celebration was attended by family and local officials, including Civil Registrar Caroline De Meerleer.

Robert, originally from Kerksken, had a diverse career history including work in a knitting factory, a mirror factory, and as a glass cutter. He also served as a commando in the military and was deployed to Congo during its independence in 1960. Following his marriage in 1961, he trained as a master mason. Anny worked in lace and passementerie industries before dedicating her time to raising her children and grandchildren. The couple, who enjoy gardening and cooking in their retirement, celebrated the milestone alongside their growing family.
