Nifty 50 breaks record 12-session streak of failing to surpass previous highs

The NSE Nifty 50 index recently concluded a historic 12-session streak, from August 4 to August 19, 2026, during which it failed to surpass the previous day’s high. This marks the longest such streak in the index's history, breaking the previous record of nine sessions set in December 2014.

Market analysts noted that the streak coincided with the rollout of SEBI’s Closing Auction Session (CAS) on August 3, 2026, though they cautioned that the timing does not necessarily prove causation. Other contributing macro factors included rising crude oil prices and higher global bond yields.

On August 20, 2026, the Nifty ended its streak by clearing the previous day's high, reaching a peak of 24,265 before closing at 24,211. The index's performance showed significant volatility, characterized by a tug-of-war between buyers and sellers.
