Nifty 50 index trades 11% below peak amid technical volatility

The Nifty 50 index has experienced a decline of approximately 11% from its December 2025 peak. Despite this dip, constituent company earnings have remained resilient, growing at an average annual rate of 12.6% over the last five years. This divergence between earnings growth and index price appreciation suggests the market has become cheaper, supported by a current P/E ratio of approximately 19.5, which is below the 10-year median of 23.3.

Technical analysis indicates short-term bearish momentum, with the index trading below key exponential moving averages. A recent breakdown occurred at the 23,138.50 support level. Analysts are monitoring a major confluence support zone between 22,000 and 22,200, which combines a rising trendline from late 2023 with a historical demand zone. A sustained break below the 22,000 level could signal a significant change in market structure.
