Reform UK officials resign amid foreign donation scandal
Reform UK is facing a significant funding scandal following an undercover investigation by Channel 4 News and Verbatim Investigations. The reports allege that senior party officials discussed methods to circumvent UK electoral laws regarding foreign donations. Specifically, footage captured Dan Jukes, a senior adviser to Nigel Farage, suggesting that a £500,000 donation from an American businessman could be channeled through his UK-resident son to bypass legal restrictions.
In response to the revelations, two high-ranking officials, James Orr, the party's head of policy, and Dan Jukes, have stepped down. Reform UK has launched an internal investigation into the matter, while the Metropolitan Police are assessing reports of potential breaches of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000. Additionally, the Liberal Democrats and the Labour Party have referred the case to the police, and the Electoral Commission is reviewing the information.
Separate scrutiny has also fallen on the polling firm JL Partners, which is being investigated by industry bodies for allegedly failing to disclose that Reform UK was the client behind several commissioned polls. Meanwhile, Nigel Farage has defended the party, dismissing the allegations as a coordinated attack and characterizing the undercover footage as entrapment. He maintains that the party has broken no laws.
