Reform UK faces donation scandal following undercover investigation
Reform UK is facing a significant political crisis following an undercover investigation by Channel 4 News and Verbatim Investigations. The report featured footage of party officials discussing ways to secure a £500,000 donation from a purported American financier through a UK-based intermediary, a practice that would violate British electoral laws regarding foreign funding.
In response to the scandal, two senior party figures, policy director James Orr and longtime aide Dan Jukes, have stepped down or been suspended pending an internal investigation. Nigel Farage has admitted the situation “looks bad” but maintains that the party has not breached any laws. Farage claimed he was not actively listening to the discussions during the filmed meeting, stating, “I am not a compliance officer.”
The controversy has overshadowed the party’s annual conference in Birmingham. Additionally, the party is facing scrutiny over a £32,500 payment from a US firm for polling services and an ongoing parliamentary probe into a £5 million donation Farage received from Christopher Harborne. The Metropolitan Police are currently considering complaints regarding these donation allegations.
