Nigel Farage's Clacton by-election triggers £250k cost amid £5m gift controversy

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage resigned as MP for the Clacton constituency, prompting a by‑election scheduled for 13 August 2026. The contest will feature a record 34 candidates, including comedy figure Count Binface, after the major parties (Labour, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and Greens) chose to boycott the poll. Local authorities estimate the cost of running the by‑election at about £250,000, a sum largely borne by the government.

The resignation follows intense scrutiny of Farage’s personal finances. He received an undisclosed £5 million gift from crypto‑billionaire Christopher Harborne in April 2024, a transfer that parliamentary standards commissioners are investigating for possible non‑declaration. The probe was paused when Farage stood down but will resume if he wins the seat.

Amid the financial controversy, Farage said he is “open‑minded” to a possible pact with Rupert Lowe’s Restore Britain party, while insisting he will not abandon allies such as Suella Braverman or George Cottrell. Reform UK also announced “Operation Fortress”, a proposed military‑style operation to stop small‑boat asylum seekers crossing the English Channel, a policy that has drawn legal and expert criticism.
