Nigel Farage Resigns, Triggers Clacton By‑election Amid £5 million Donation Probe

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage announced his resignation as MP for the coastal constituency of Clacton, saying the by‑election will let "the people of Clacton" judge his actions. He will stand again in the contest, framing it as a "people vs the establishment" fight.

The resignation follows a parliamentary standards investigation into a £5 million gift from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne, which banks reported to the UK National Crime Agency as a possible money‑laundering case. Farage maintains the money was a personal, unconditional gift received before he was elected and therefore did not need to be declared. A separate probe also looks at donations from convicted fraudster George Cottrell.

All major parties – Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats and Greens – have said they will not field candidates, leaving only novelty challenger Count Binface (the satirical candidate Jonathan David Harvey) and reality‑TV figure Luke Worley as the declared opponents. The by‑election is expected to be held in August, with the exact date to be set by parliamentary authorities.
