Nigel Farage resigns as MP amid undeclared donations probe

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage announced he is resigning as the MP for Clacton, triggering a by‑election that he says he will contest. The move comes after intense scrutiny of two financial matters. First, a £5 million gift from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne, made before Farage was elected, which he describes as a personal security payment and not a political donation. Second, allegations that convicted fraudster George Cottrell provided undisclosed benefits – security staff, drivers and a five‑storey Georgian townhouse near Buckingham Palace – in the year preceding Farage’s election.

Parliamentary standards commissioner Daniel Greenberg is investigating both issues; potential sanctions include a suspension of more than ten days, which would also force a by‑election. Farage denies any breach of rules, labels the inquiries a “hit‑job” by the establishment and says he will consider legal action against the Sunday Times. Labour, Liberal Democrats and Conservatives have all called for thorough investigations.
