Nigel Farage wins Clacton by-election amid financial probe

Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, has won the Clacton by-election with 63% of the vote, securing 22,239 votes. The contest was notable for its high number of candidates, with 34 people running, though major political parties boycotted the election, labeling it a “circus” or “show.”

Following his re-election, the British Parliament has resumed an investigation into Farage’s finances. The inquiry focuses on an undeclared £5 million donation from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne, received shortly before the July 2024 general election. Farage has maintained that the funds were for his personal security. If the investigation finds a serious breach of parliamentary rules, Farage could face suspension from the House of Commons, which may trigger another by-election.

In the election results, spoof candidate Count Binface achieved a significant performance, securing 9,455 votes (27% of the poll), marking a record for a non-serious candidate. Farage did not attend the official declaration of results, citing police warnings regarding potential disruptions intended to demean the outcome.
