Nigel Mansell secured 1992 F1 World Championship

Nigel Mansell secured his first and only Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship on August 16, 1992, at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Driving for Williams-Renault, Mansell clinched the title after finishing second in the race, which was won by Ayrton Senna for McLaren.

Mansell’s 1992 championship campaign was marked by a significant undisclosed injury. Following an accident at the 1991 Australian Grand Prix, Mansell suffered broken toes and severe joint damage in his left foot. Despite medical advice suggesting a three-to-four-month recovery period, he opted to continue training and competing to avoid missing races. This injury was not widely reported at the time, with some contemporary accounts describing it merely as a severe ankle contusion.

Throughout the dominant 1992 season, Mansell achieved nine victories in 16 races. To compensate for the physical challenges and maintain competitiveness against rivals like Michael Schumacher, Mansell focused heavily on physical conditioning, losing approximately seven kilograms during his preparation.
