Nigella damascena: Autumn sowing tips for summer blooms

Gardening enthusiasts are encouraged to sow Nigella damascena, also known as ‘love-in-a-mist’, during September or October to ensure a vibrant bloom the following summer. This annual flower is noted for its delicate blue, white, pink, or violet blossoms and lacy foliage.

Following recommendations from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), sowing these hardy annuals in the autumn allows them to take advantage of moist soil and natural autumn moisture. A key benefit of autumn sowing is that these plants may bloom earlier in the next season compared to those sown in spring.

To ensure success, especially in regions with harsh winters like Lithuania, it is advised to sow only a portion of the seeds in autumn and save the rest for spring. Planting should occur in sunny locations with well-drained soil, avoiding areas where water accumulates during winter.
