Niger’s military government has accused France of orchestrating a failed mutiny that occurred in Niamey on August 29. The uprising involved soldiers attacking Air Base 101 and targeting sensitive sites, including the presidential palace. The mutiny was suppressed by Nigerien forces with the assistance of the Russian paramilitary group Africa Corps.

Nigerien spokesperson Soumana Boubacar stated the operation was supported by a network of collusion led by the French government. In response, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot dismissed the allegations as ‘pure fantasy,’ asserting that France had neither the intention nor the means to organize such an operation.

Following the unrest, Nigerien authorities have begun arresting suspected mutineers and reviewing military appointments to consolidate the power of General Abdourahamane Tiani. Additionally, former Defense Minister Kalla Moutari was arrested in the Maradi region, though official motives for his detention have not been released. The incident highlights deepening fractures within the Nigerien military and the country’s shifting geopolitical alliances toward Russia.
