Niger and Nigeria face diplomatic tension over mutiny allegations

Diplomatic tensions persist between Niger and Nigeria following a mutiny in Niamey on August 28-29, 2026. The Nigerien Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on September 17, responding to a previous declaration from Nigeria that denied Abuja’s involvement in any destabilization attempts.

Niger maintains that it has not officially accused Nigeria of involvement. The controversy stems from testimony by Captain Roger Gabriel on Nigerian public television, which mentioned potential external interventions involving Chad, France, Benin, and associates of former President Mohamed Bazoum, but did not explicitly name Nigeria. Niger contends that Abuja’s recent communiqué was addressing social media allegations rather than official accusations from Niamey.

Nigerian authorities have documented these “destabilization maneuvers” and stated they reserve the right to bring cases before international justice once the participation of specific actors is established.
