Niger implements fuel export ban and nighttime station closures
Niger is facing a severe fuel crisis that has reached the capital, Niamey, characterized by long queues at gas stations and significant economic disruption. To secure the domestic market, the government has banned the export of super gasoline and diesel, mandating that national production be used primarily for local consumption.
In addition to export bans, authorities have implemented nighttime restrictions, requiring gas stations to close between 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM to facilitate fuel deliveries by the state distributor, SONIDEP. These measures, intended to improve logistics, have instead led to increased congestion and frustration among motorists.
The shortage is attributed to a gap between production and demand. The SORAZ refinery in Zinder is currently operating at approximately 15,000 barrels per day, below its 20,000-barrel capacity. Furthermore, the refinery's output of 1.6 million liters per day falls short of the estimated national demand of 3 million liters. To mitigate the crisis, a technical committee was formed on October 12, and emergency plans include purchasing fuel from Nigeria and awaiting a shipment of 30 million liters from Algeria.
