Niger Bridge to receive CCTV and streetlights to curb vandalism

Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has ordered the immediate installation of CCTV cameras and solar-powered streetlights on the First Niger Bridge to combat the theft and vandalism of critical infrastructure components. During an inspection of the bridge, Umahi noted that vandals had stolen bolts, expansion joints, and iron bars, and had even disconnected an overhead steel bar.

Umahi directed the Controller of Works in Anambra State, Timothy Emenike, to procure and replace the stolen bolts immediately. The new surveillance system is intended to transmit live footage to officials and the police to facilitate the arrest of suspects.

Additionally, the Minister inspected the Second Niger Bridge, where he observed areas being threatened by erosion. He noted that maintenance work on the First Niger Bridge would require nighttime closures to complete necessary repairs and welding.
