Niger Delta Economic Summit trademark dispute reaches Federal High Court

The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an interim restraining order to halt preparations for an event titled ‘Niger Delta Economic and Investment Summit’ organized by the Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce. The order directs all parties to maintain the status quo pending a final determination of a trademark infringement lawsuit.

The suit was filed by Kenule Nwiya Jnr, the founder of the original Niger Delta Economic and Investment Summit (NDEIS). Nwiya alleges that the name is legally protected by trademark registration and that the Chambers of Commerce’s use of the name could cause confusion and undermine the brand’s established goodwill. He argued that the platform was built through years of investment and advocacy for regional development.

Presiding Justice Obiora Atuegwu Egwuatu ordered the parties to respect the court's authority and pursue grievances through legal channels. The dispute also involves an existing suit and injunction originating from a court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
