Niger Delta Power Holding Company to launch renewable energy projects in Northern Nigeria

The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) is launching the second phase of the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP), which will focus on renewable energy investments in Northern Nigeria. Managing Director Jennifer Adighije stated that the initiative aims to diversify the nation’s electricity generation mix in alignment with the country’s Energy Transition Plan.

Planned interventions include solar energy, mini-hydropower projects, and off-grid solutions to address existing electricity supply gaps. This marks a shift from NIPP Phase 1, which focused on power generation from fossil fuels, specifically gas.

Currently, NDPHC contributes approximately 4,000MW to Nigeria’s total installed generation capacity of 12,000MW. Under the first phase of the NIPP, the company has built 10 power plants, seven of which are commercially operational. Additionally, the company has completed 120 transmission projects, including various substations and expansion projects with a combined transformer capacity exceeding 10,000MVA.
