Niger imposes overnight curfew on petrol sales amid fuel shortages
Niger has implemented a temporary overnight curfew on petrol sales to address growing fuel shortages that have reached the capital, Niamey. Under the new regulations, fuel stations are prohibited from selling petrol between 9pm and 6am, with exceptions made only for designated stations to allow suppliers, including the Nigerien Petroleum Company (Sonidep), to restock.
Authorities have also banned the sale of fuel in jerry cans outside of official stations in all areas with at least one petrol station. The shortage has led to long queues and significant disruptions to daily life, making it difficult for residents to commute to work or conduct routine activities. While officials have called for civic-mindedness, the cause of the shortage and the timeline for a return to normal supply levels remain unclear.
