Niger police station attack kills 15 officers

Fifteen police officers were killed during an armed attack on a gendarmerie station in the town of Tissa, located in the Dosso region of southwest Niger. The attack, which occurred on a Friday, was carried out by unidentified gunmen traveling on motorcycles. Local officials suggested the attackers may have originated from neighboring Nigeria, though no group has officially claimed responsibility.

Social media footage from residents showed burned vehicles and facilities within the police compound following the assault. In response to the deaths, regional authorities suspended recreational activities, including a local football tournament, as a mark of mourning. The victims were buried on Saturday in the city of Dosso.

The incident follows a pattern of rising violence in the border regions of Niger, Benin, and Nigeria. Conflict monitors, such as ACLED, have noted an increase in activity from groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State in these areas. This attack comes shortly after other violent incidents in the region, including an attack in Farai and several village raids that caused significant civilian displacement.
