Niger's military leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani, has ordered a major reshuffle of the country's top military command. This reorganization follows a failed mutiny in Niamey that occurred in late August 2026.

By decree, General Mamane Sani Kiaou has been appointed as the new Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, replacing General Moussa Salaou Barmou. General Abdourahmane Abou Zataka has been named the new Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces, while General Ismael K. Sidi Omar has been appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the Air Force.

The mutiny involved coordinated attacks on the presidential palace, the national broadcaster, and Air Base 101 near Niamey's international airport. During the unrest, approximately 200 Russian Africa Corps soldiers provided ground and air support to help loyalist forces retake the airbase. Reports indicate that at least 27 people were killed during the clashes.

Analysts suggest the insurrection was driven by internal discord, including grievances over pay discrepancies between officer ranks and high casualties sustained from non-state armed groups. The leadership changes are seen as an effort to stabilize the military command following the internal crisis.
