Niger accuses France of orchestrating failed military mutiny in Niamey
The Nigerien military government, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, has accused France of orchestrating a failed mutiny that occurred in Niamey on the night of August 28-29. The unrest targeted strategic locations, including Base 101 at the Diori Hamani International Airport and the presidential palace. The mutiny was eventually suppressed with the assistance of the Russian Africa Corps.
Nigerien authorities claim to have compiled significant documentation regarding this alleged aggression and have reserved the right to bring the matter before international courts. Government spokesperson Soumana Boubacar described the operation as being led by a vast network of collusion headed by the French administration under President Emmanuel Macron. The government also suggested that certain unnamed African nations may have acted as intermediaries for these destabilization efforts.
France has categorically denied the accusations. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot dismissed the claims as ‘pure fantasy,’ stating that France had neither the intention nor the means to mobilize such an operation. This diplomatic confrontation highlights the deepening rift between Niamey and Paris since the 2023 coup, as Niger increasingly shifts its security partnerships toward Russia.
