Niger seeks use of Nigerian ports amid dispute with Benin

Niger is seeking to utilize Nigerian ports to facilitate international trade following a diplomatic dispute with the Benin Republic that has disrupted traditional trade corridors. As a landlocked nation, Niger has historically relied heavily on the Port of Cotonou in Benin, but border closures and political tensions have necessitated alternative routes.

A delegation from Nigerien Customs recently met with the Nigeria Customs Service in Abuja to discuss trade facilitation and increased cooperation. Abdoulaye Vincent, the Comptroller of Nigerien Customs in Dosso, emphasized the need for stronger collaboration to boost revenue and alleviate economic hardship for border communities. Vincent also noted that insecurity along routes through Burkina Faso and Togo has further complicated trade logistics.

Tensions between Niger and Benin escalated following the July 2023 coup in Niger. The Nigerien military junta accused Benin of attempting to destabilize the country, a claim Benin has denied. Relations were further strained after Benin supported the ECOWAS position regarding the reinstatement of ousted Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum, leading Niger to close its border with Benin.
