Niger signs new uranium agreement for Madaouela project
The Republic of Niger has signed a new mining agreement to revive the Madaouela uranium project in the Agadez region. Under the terms of the convention signed on September 23, 2026, the Nigerien state will hold a 40% stake in the project, while the Australian company Atomic Eagle retains 60% and operational control.
The agreement includes a $10 million initial flat royalty payment and commitments toward local development and training for the mining administration. The project, managed through the Madaouela Mining Company (MAMICO), is expected to create approximately 1,000 direct jobs. Public estimates suggest the site contains roughly 52,800 tonnes of uranium resources.
This development follows a period of uncertainty after Niger revoked the mining permit held by the Canadian firm GoviEx Uranium in July 2024. The new arrangement represents a strategic shift for Niger as it seeks to diversify its international investment partners and increase domestic revenue from mineral resources, moving away from historical reliance on French influence in the sector. Atomic Eagle plans to resume technical studies and aims to be ready for construction within about two years, pending financing and necessary authorizations.
