Niger State Government House stampede kills three in Minna
At least three people died and several others were injured during a stampede at the Niger State Government House in Minna on Tuesday night. The incident occurred as a crowd gathered following reports that Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago would distribute ₦10,000 to those present.
Reports indicate that the gathering included youths who had been invited to the Government House to discuss shelving a planned protest regarding the recent deaths of 37 artisanal miners. While some government appointees suggested the youths were there to show solidarity with the governor, the crowd reportedly surged after news of the cash distribution spread.
Among the deceased were Dije and her daughter Hurairat, both internally displaced persons from the Allawa community in the Shiroro Local Government Area. The injured are currently receiving treatment at Minna General Hospital. The state government and the Niger State Police Command have stated they are working to verify the details and will issue further statements.
