Niger State: 37 suspected miners die in NSCDC custody
At least 37 suspected illegal miners died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State. While the NSCDC initially suggested the deaths might have been caused by a disease outbreak, intelligence reports and survivor accounts suggest the fatalities resulted from extreme overcrowding and inadequate ventilation in the detention cells.
Survivors described harrowing conditions, including intense heat and a lack of water, with some alleging they had to drink urine to survive. Witnesses reported that detainees repeatedly called for help as colleagues collapsed, but their pleas were allegedly ignored by personnel on duty.
The deaths have triggered significant unrest in Minna, including protests that led to attacks on public buildings and a response from security forces involving tear gas and gunfire. In response, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago imposed a 24-hour curfew and declared three days of mourning.
President Bola Tinubu has ordered a full and transparent investigation into the incident, demanding accountability and stating that any official found negligent or abusive must be prosecuted. Following the reports, Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo suspended the Niger State NSCDC Commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, pending the outcome of the inquiry.
