Niger transport companies face sanctions after fatal Maradi bus collision

Niger's Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Colonel-Major Abdouramane Amadou, has met with officials from transport companies STM and SONITRAV following a fatal bus collision in the Maradi region on August 7, 2026. The accident resulted in 22 deaths and 37 injuries.

During the meeting, the Minister addressed the companies regarding their respective responsibilities for the crash. He emphasized that human behavior remains a primary cause of road accidents despite national awareness programs. The Minister warned that depending on the findings of the investigation, the companies could face sanctions ranging from official warnings and activity suspensions to the total withdrawal of their operating licenses.

Legal proceedings may also be pursued by competent authorities. The meeting included representatives from the Nigerien Road Safety Agency (ANISER) and the National Gendarmerie to review the circumstances of the tragedy.
