Nigeria: 18 states adopt harmonised tax law to end multiple taxation

Eighteen Nigerian states have adopted a Model Harmonised Taxes and Levies Law as part of national efforts to eliminate multiple and overlapping taxation. The reforms aim to reduce the number of collection items from over 50 to just nine sub-heads, simplifying the system for businesses and low-income earners while minimizing revenue leakages through technology.

In Kaduna State, Governor Uba Sani has pledged support for the Office of the Tax Ombud to align state administration with these national reforms. The collaboration seeks to strengthen revenue mobilisation, protect taxpayer rights, and boost investor confidence by providing independent mediation and dispute resolution mechanisms for taxpayers.
