Nigeria Academic Staff Unions Set Nationwide Strikes

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) announced a nationwide strike starting April 6, 2021, citing grievances such as non‑implementation of a 2010 agreement, unpaid salaries and arrears of the new minimum wage, and other longstanding issues affecting polytechnic education. ASUP President Anderson U Ezeibe listed ten conditions that could end the industrial action, including the implementation of a 2014 needs‑assessment report and the reconstitution of governing councils.

In a related development, the Ondo State government approved a special intervention fund to settle an ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Adekunle Ajasin University. Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s approval aims to meet the university’s financial obligations, and officials urged students to remain calm while the fund is released.
