Nigeria evacuates first Ebola patient in over a decade to Switzerland

Nigeria has no active Ebola cases following the medical evacuation of the country’s index patient and her husband to Switzerland, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The patient, a 42-year-old Swiss citizen born in Uganda and wife of a Swiss diplomat, was stabilized by Nigerian medical teams after being diagnosed with the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has activated its highest level of the National Incident Management System. While the patient and her asymptomatic husband have been moved to Switzerland for continued care, Nigerian authorities are monitoring 52 remaining contacts.

To investigate the source of the infection, the Africa CDC is deploying a team of scientists to Abuja. Researchers are examining potential transmission routes, including a possible connection to a recent case in Kenya, as the patient’s travel records indicate she did not visit the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the current epicenter of the outbreak. The patient had traveled through Uganda’s Entebbe International Airport in early October.
