Nigeria Advances Constitutional Amendments for State Police

The Nigerian Presidency reported that progress is being made toward establishing state police, with a constitutional amendment expected soon after months of consultations among the Executive, the National Assembly and security authorities. Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila said the amendment will be followed by enabling legislation, emphasizing broad national support for the initiative.

In the Senate, Chairman Yemi Adaramodu pledged to fast‑track the constitutional process, citing rising insecurity, banditry and recent school abductions in Oyo State as drivers for the reform. The Senate plans to accelerate legislative action to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s push for decentralised policing, which must ultimately be approved by two‑thirds of the state Houses of Assembly.
