Nigeria advances digital sovereignty through AI and cloud infrastructure

Nigeria is advancing a strategic push toward digital sovereignty and indigenous Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities. At the GITEX Nigeria 2026 summit in Abuja, government officials and industry leaders emphasized the need for the nation to transition from a consumer of technology to a producer and exporter of digital solutions.

Key initiatives include the National Sovereign Cloud Initiative and Project Bridge, which aims to deploy 90,000 kilometers of fiber-optic infrastructure to enhance connectivity. To support these goals, Huawei has launched new cloud infrastructure in Nigeria specifically designed for agentic AI, enabling businesses and government agencies to deploy autonomous AI agents on local hardware to ensure data residency and low latency.

Nokia is also positioning itself within the African market by leveraging AI and edge computing to transform telecommunications networks. Meanwhile, medical experts are advocating for the integration of AI and machine learning into public health research to address resource gaps and sustain scientific innovation across the continent.
