Nigeria agricultural experts propose new technology adoption models
Experts are calling for structural and technological reforms to address Nigeria’s persistent food insecurity and agricultural challenges. Professor Olushola Jamiu Saliu has proposed a “Three-Legged” model to bridge the gap between research and technology adoption. This model advocates for a synergy between the government, which provides policy and infrastructure; agro-processing industries, which ensure markets and reduce post-harvest losses; and organized smallholder farmer networks to increase bargaining power and access to credit.
To implement this, Prof. Saliu suggested transforming the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) into a National Agricultural Development and Technology Transformation Commission (NADTTC). This body would drive privatization through public-private partnerships and manage essential infrastructure.
Complementing these structural suggestions, Dr. Jephter Akaehie emphasized the need for technologies that respect biological diversity. He warned against the risks of over-reliance on uniform crop varieties, noting that maintaining indigenous crops and genetic diversity is vital for long-term agricultural resilience and environmental health.
