Nigeria Allocates N217 billion to Expand Medical Education and Training

The Federal Government of Nigeria pledged more than N217 billion over the next two years to strengthen medical education and healthcare training nationwide. The investment, announced by Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa at the inaugural International Conference of the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, University of Lagos, includes N97 billion for 2025 and an additional N120.5 billion for 2026.

Key measures focus on expanding training capacity, upgrading infrastructure, procuring modern equipment, and establishing Medical Simulation and Technology Centres across the country to provide simulation‑based learning that meets international standards. The government also approved a N1 billion Endowment Fund for the Faculty and created the National Research and Innovation Development Fund to sustain financing for research, innovation and commercialisation in universities and research institutes.

The initiatives aim to align Nigerian medical curricula with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, genomics, digital pathology and precision medicine, positioning the nation as a regional hub for biomedical research and healthcare innovation.
