APM Terminals signs MoU to develop Nigeria's Badagry Deep Seaport

The Nigerian Federal Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance the development of the proposed Badagry Deep Seaport in Lagos State. The agreement was signed in Copenhagen, Denmark, between APM Terminals—a subsidiary of A. P. Moller–Maersk—and Badagry Port Development Limited, alongside Quinn McGrath Marine and Environmental Services Limited.

The MoU commits the parties to exclusive negotiations regarding the greenfield port project. The facility is designed to provide additional deepwater capacity, allowing Nigeria to accommodate larger container vessels and increase cargo-handling capabilities. The project aims to create new transshipment opportunities for Nigeria and the broader West African market while helping to decongest existing city ports.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, led the delegation to Denmark to secure the deal, stating that the project is central to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of establishing Nigeria as a premier trade and logistics hub in West Africa. The development is expected to stimulate investment and create employment opportunities across the maritime value chain, including logistics, manufacturing, and warehousing.
