Nigeria and Brazil move agro‑trade initiative to implementation phase

Nigeria’s Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, announced that the Nigeria‑Brazil Agro‑Trade Initiative has progressed from dialogue to delivery, marking the start of implementation for the bilateral agriculture and livestock partnership. The announcement was made during a high‑level meeting in Abuja with Brazil’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, André Carlos Alves de Paula Filho, and a Brazilian delegation.

Shettima said the Joint Agriculture and Livestock Technical Working Group is now operational, with sub‑groups focusing on dairy and livestock genetics, soybean productivity, agricultural policy and agro‑climatic risk zoning. Private‑sector operators in both countries have been cleared to commence trade in the identified commodities. The move follows the state visits of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula, who called for greater trade, investment and technical cooperation between the two economies.

“we have moved with deliberate steps from dialogue to delivery, from agreements to implementation,” Shettima declared, emphasizing that the partnership aims to deliver tangible benefits to farmers, processors and exporters in Nigeria and Brazil.
