Nigeria and Ghana Commit to Major Power Grid Overhaul

Nigeria’s Federal Government, led by Power Minister Joseph Tegbe, announced a structural overhaul of the national transmission network. A Technical Working Committee will work with the Transmission Company of Nigeria and the Nigerian Independent System Operator to reinforce critical corridors, expand redundancy and modernise control systems, aiming to curb frequent outages.

Ghana’s government, represented by Technical Advisor Dr Yussif Sulemana, outlined a multi‑billion‑dollar programme to boost generation, transmission and distribution. Plans include a US$700 million second gas‑processing plant at Atuabo, a US$278 million emergency transformer rollout, and a US$3.4 billion renewable‑energy action plan for solar, storage and wind projects. The country has injected about GH₵15.2 billion to address financing gaps and settle legacy debts, with electricity access now around 89 percent and installed capacity exceeding 5,300 MW.
