Nigeria and Ghana expand regional trade in agriculture and energy

Nigerian onion traders have resumed exports to Ghana following the lifting of a suspension by the National Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NOPPMAN). The suspension was previously implemented due to challenges regarding market access, consignment allocation, and the safety of traders at the Kotoku Market. The resumption follows consultations between Nigerian and Ghanaian trade ministries, diplomatic authorities, and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Separately, Ghana is working toward exporting electricity to Nigeria as part of a broader strategy to become a West African energy hub. Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor stated that Ghana already supplies power to Burkina Faso, Benin, Togo, and Côte d’Ivoire. To support future exports and domestic needs, the government plans to utilize a mix of natural gas, renewable energy, and nuclear power. While Nigeria represents a massive market, officials noted that supplying the country will require sufficient transmission capacity through the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) network.
