Nigeria and Ghana sign maritime MoU to strengthen security and boost Blue Economy

Nigeria and Ghana have concluded a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on maritime cooperation, signed in Lagos by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA). The agreement creates a framework for joint action on maritime safety and security, capacity building, regulatory development, and the mutual recognition of seafarers’ Certificates of Competency. It also sets up a Joint Consultative Team that will meet twice a year, alternating between the two countries, to oversee implementation, monitor progress and plan joint enforcement operations against piracy, armed robbery at sea and maritime terrorism in the Gulf of Guinea.

Both sides highlighted the pact as a milestone for regional integration and the development of the West African “Blue Economy”. NIMASA Director‑General Dr. Dayo Mobereola and GMA Director‑General Dr. Kamal‑Deen Ali said the MoU will enhance maritime governance, improve regulatory efficiency and unlock trade opportunities, reinforcing the long‑standing partnership between the two maritime administrations.
