Nigeria Justice Leaders Push Stronger Digital Evidence Management Against AI‑Driven Cybercrime

Stakeholders in Nigeria’s criminal justice system called for enhanced digital evidence management, inter‑agency collaboration and continuous capacity building during a specialised four‑day training on cybercrime, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital evidence in Lagos. The workshop, organised by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) with the Joint Case Team on Cybercrime (JCTC) and Federal High Court judges, was funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Justice and Security.

Rotimi Oyedepo, the Director of Public Prosecutions, warned that cybercrime has evolved to include AI‑assisted offences such as deepfakes, voice‑cloning, ransomware, cryptocurrency‑enabled fraud, identity theft and complex transnational networks. He urged an innovative, intelligence‑driven and collaborative response, stressing that investigations now cross national borders and require coordinated action among investigators, prosecutors, regulators and forensic experts. Participants said the training equipped them to spot red flags, conduct diligent investigations and build stronger prosecutions.
