Nigeria and India issue flood alerts for multiple regions

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has issued a flood alert for 33 Nigerian states, warning of high riverine flooding risks between August 19 and August 25, 2026. NiHSA Director-General Umar Mohammed has advised residents in floodplains to relocate to higher ground to prevent casualties and property damage. Vulnerable areas include Kaduna, Niger, Taraba, and Delta, among others. In Kaduna, over 2,000 communities, hundreds of schools, and numerous health facilities are at risk, while Niger State faces threats to nearly 900 communities and significant farmland.

In India, Lucknow has been placed under a flash flood watch due to elevated river discharge and heavy rainfall forecasts. For the period of August 19 to August 20, 2026, river flow in Lucknow was reported at 1.9 to 2.1 times the normal rate. Residents have been cautioned regarding potential waterlogging, travel disruptions, and the risks associated with low-lying terrain.
