Nigeria Super Eagles begin AFCON 2027 qualifying training in Uyo

The Nigeria national football team has commenced training in Uyo for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign. Head coach Eric Chelle led the first session at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium with 23 players. The squad is preparing for an opening match against Madagascar on September 25, followed by a fixture against Guinea-Bissau on September 29.

Nigeria will be without striker Victor Osimhen due to an adductor injury; Taiwo Awoniyi has been called up as his replacement. Additionally, Gift Orban remains excluded from the squad pending administrative clearance regarding his international eligibility. Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is expected to join the camp on Thursday after being granted leave for personal matters.

Former defender Azubuike Egwuekwe has urged the Super Eagles to avoid the mistakes of their 2026 World Cup qualification failure, warning the team to respect all opponents in Group L, including Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau, and Tanzania. Meanwhile, Madagascar midfielder Rayan Raveloson stated that his team is not intimidated by Nigeria’s star-studded roster.
